A downloadable minimalist TTRPG

  • Dueling Declarations (DD) is sort of a combination of Realis and 2400
  • The presentation of DD is deliberately minimalist, in part for accessibility reasons.
  • The rules are explained at length for clarity, but are simple in practice. Trust your gut.
  • The DD core rules consist of three text files: The basic rules, the character classes, and some optional rules.

At its core, this game is about Declarations (simple statements) associated with die sizes, like: "d6: I always find something valuable in a ruin."

Declarations define characters and the world, and when they conflict, they roll dice against each other.

The basic classes included have a sort of post-apocalyptic science fantasy vibe, but it's easy to do whatever genre you like: New classes are easy to make (they're three Declarations apiece) and NPC classes are even easier (one Declaration each), plus world Declarations do a lot to define a setting.

The core rules start with 20 classes and 9 NPC classes, but you're encouraged to roll your own!

In general, the game is intended as a framework you can tinker with, if you're into that sort of thing.

That's why I've released these rules under the Creative Comrades License Agreement (CCLA 1.0). You are free to share and adapt for any medium or format, including commercially, provided you credit me, and are not a company/millionaire or a dickhead (read the terms).

The group as a whole decides who does and does not qualify.

Other than that, I love the simplicity of the distilled game design on display here.

I've fixed it. It's now "what does and does not qualify."

Thank you for your kind words! Be sure to check out the supplement I wrote: https://xiombarg.itch.io/declarations-of-darkness
